Whitemoss Common Tarn

I must have walked past this tarn many a dozen times over the years, and on most of these occasions there was hardly enough open water to provide swimming space for a family of ducks. The size of the tarn has never been in question, but as long as I've known this spot, it has been overgrown with Rhododendrons and chocked with reeds and grasses.

This must be a far cry from the days when William Wordsworth would walk from Rydal Mount to skate on the tarn, which according to the National Trust has the name of Skaters Tarn.

Thankfully when I came here in spring 2009, the National Trust were in the process of clearing the weed from the tarn to open up the area of clear water.
