Styhead Tarn

This is one of the busiest of the Lake District tarns. Unless you pass by the tarn in exceptionally bad weather, you are almost guaranteed to meet other walkers. Its central location, and close proximity to some of the Lake District’s favorite mountains have both contributed greatly to its popularity. With Great Gable, Great End, Allen Crags, and not forgetting the Corridor route to Scafell Pike all available by including the tarn in your route.

 Near the Tarn, at the point where the path to Great Gable meets Styhead Pass a not too subtle reminder that the fells can be a dangerous place, is found, in the form of a mountain rescue stretcher box. The box is an ideal place to get some shelter from the wind. Believe me, when the wind blows through here, you won’t want to sit in the open.

  
 
 
   
 

 The tarns main source is Sprinkling tarn which can be found about 530ft higher up on Seathwaite Fell. The water then flows into Styhead Gill, before crashing down Taylor Gill Force, past Seathwaite and then into Borrowdale Valley
